He will be heading the new research group “Big Data Management” at the TU Berlin. As a postdoctoral associate in the "Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory" at MIT, he worked with the 2014 Turing Award recipient Prof. Michael Stonebraker on various data integration problems. He earned his PhD at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, Germany and is the recipient of the best PhD Dissertation Award in Potsdam University.
His work on data integration and data profiling, for which he has received a CIKM Best Student Paper Award and a SIGMOD Best Demonstration Award, will add new perspective to the BBDC, covering the data analytics and data integration aspects of big data research. “The BBDC provides the perfect platform for researching hard and real big data problems in a collaborative environment in Germany” he says. On the scope and dimension of his research, Prof. Abedjan says: “Our research focuses on improving the scalability and accuracy of integration routines. While scalability requires automation of routines accuracy of a curation effort requires often times human involvement. The main challenge is to find the best interplay between automatic algorithms and human involvement in preparing and curating large datasets.”
The BBDC is thrilled to have Prof. Abedjan as a new member and looks forward to see the results of his upcoming research projects.
